Course objectives

-To familiarize the students with the books of the Old Testament, its major events and the stories
-To help the students know the content, structure, message and theme of the books of the Old Testament.
-To orient the students with the major divisions and different types of literature in the Old Testament

Course Requirements

-Final Examination                          60%
-Internal Assessment                       40%
-prepare an outline of each book of the Qld Testament 15%
-reading report: 15%
-Class attendance and participation: 10%

Course outline

I. Some basic questions:

What is the Old Testament?
What is the difference between Old and the New Testament?
Why should we read the Old Testament?

II. Major divisions of the Old Testament: A brief explanation of the content, structure, major events, outline, theme, and message.

  1. Pentateuch: First five books of the Bible: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy
  2. Historical books: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, I and II Samuel, I and II Kings, I and II Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther
  3. Prophets: Who is a prophet? What is a prophecy?

Major prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel
Minor prophets: Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi

  1.  Poetical books: Psalms, Song of Solomon and Lamentations
  2. Wisdom books: Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes,
  3. Apocalyptic book: Daniel
