Course Objectives

  1. To survey the pastoral care and counseling practices/pattern of the Church.
  2. To introduce the basic skills of pastoral counseling.
  3. To introduce the selected theories of personality and psychotherapeutic traditions and their relevance for pastoral counselling.
  4. To provide unique resources for facilitating care and healing.

Course Outline

I. Introduction

  • Definition of terms: Pastor, Pastoral Care, Pastoral Counselling, etc.

II. Pastoral Care and Counselling: Biblical, Theological and Historical Perspectives

  • Pastoral care and counselling in the Bible
  • Pastoral care and counselling in the early church
  • Pastoral care and counselling in the Reformation traditions
  • Pastoral care and counselling in recent times

III. Scope, Limitations and Functions of Pastoral Care

  • Scope and Limitations of pastoral care
  • Functions of pastoral care: Healing, Sustaining, Guiding, Reconciling, Nurturing, Empowering, etc.

IV. Basic Principles of Pastoral Counselling

  • The Core Dimensions of a Therapeutic Relationship
  • Listening Skills
  • Responding Skills

V. The Counselling Process

  • Stage I: Pre-Helping: Intense attending and Listening to the verbal and non-verbal cues from the counselee – establishing a therapeutic Relationship (rapport) enabling self-expression, Listening to verbal and non-verbal communication
  • Stage II: Responding – Exploring: Facilitating exploration of the inner world of the counselee so as to bring out the concerns, hurts and wounds of the counselee. Attention is paid to bring out previously unrecognized aspects of the counselee’s experiences that could have obstructed the healing process.
  • Stage III: Facilitating Integrative Understanding: In the light of the material brought out through the explorative stage, the counsellor is helped to see patterns in his/her ways of coping with the problem situation and identify the deficits in the coping style. Special care is given in identifying the inappropriate patterns in thinking, feeling and acting. Identifying alternate strategies of coping.
  • Stage IV: Facilitating Action: Enabling the counselees for Action. Facilitating the counselees to implement the newly worked out ways of coping with issues that prompted them to seek counselling. They are also helped to integrate their new insights about themselves, others, the world and God.
  • Stage V: Evaluation and conclusion of the process.
